Summit of Ukko-Luosto Fell

The peak of Ukko-Luosto and its breathtaking views of Pyhä-Luosto National Park

The summit of Ukko-Luosto is a circular route of approximately 5-6.5 km, along which you can find Ukko-Luosto stairs and the Ukko-Luosto scenic hut. At the top of Ukko-Luosto, there is a spherical weather station visible from afar along the Pyhä-Luosto fell road.

Starting point Luosto Gate - Pyhä-Luosto National Park

The starting point of the route is at Luosto Gate, located in the left corner of the parking area on the slopes of Luosto, right next to Santa's Hotel Aurora. At Luosto Gate, you will find comprehensive information about Pyhä-Luosto National Park, hiking trails, mountain biking trails, and snowshoe trails in the area.

The information boards provide many tips on what to take along for the hike. If there are more questions related to hiking, you can always contact the Pyhä-Luosto National Park Visitor Center at Luontokeskus Naava. The Ukko-Luosto Summit trail initially follows (winter) a cross-country ski track, through the "Hopukankuusi" old grown forest, arriving at the foot of the Ukko-Luosto stairs.

The Ukko-Luosto stairs reward their travelers with stunning views.

The Ukko-Luosto summit trail is only passable during summer and autumn season (In winter time there is high risk of avalances.) and is considered moderately challenging due to significant changes in elevation and long staircases.  There are 575 steps in the Ukko-Luosto stairs. If you descend from the summit using the same route through the stairs, the round trip distance becomes 5 km.

The Ukko-Luosto viewing platform

At the summit, there is no shelter where one could make a fire, so it's good to be prepared for the fact that Luosto Fell is windy and to prepare for the hike with warm clothing. A short distance past the cabin located in the summit, you'll find the Ukko-Luosto viewing platform, which is built right on the edge of the cliff, offering a memorable view towards the one of the Finland's oldest national parks, Pyhä-Luosto National Park.

The route continues towards the Ukko-Luosto scenic hut.

If you want to complete the entire 6.5 km circular route, the journey continues north from the viewing platform, crossing over the summit of the fell to reach the Ukko-Luosto scenic hut. At this day hut, you can take a break while admiring the views from large windows and explore a small exhibition "The Fell Lightscapes".
